Learning How to Teach Online
Instructor: Terry Herman
1 unit*

Online learning represents the fastest growing sector of education and is being implemented in an increasing variety of contexts to supplement face-to-face courses, to substitute for some face-to-face time in a blended or hybrid course, and to deliver fully online courses and programs. As a result, the importance of creating online learning environments that allow for interaction and collaboration is paramount. This course, intended for K-12 grade teachers, will enable participants to explore the ways in which online learning technologies can be used to enhance learning and to practice strategies for planning, facilitating, and assessing online learning.

Cyber Safety in the Classroom and Beyond
Instructors: Michael Buerger
1 unit*

The expanding network of communications capacity and information processing has altered notions of privacy and identity, challenged legal foundations of jurisdiction, and exposed everyone, particularly children, to a much wider array of predators than what was previously understood. This course, designed for K-12 educators, is an exploration of rapidly emerging issues created or exacerbated by the umbrella we call "cyberspace". Participants will leave with a better understanding of relevant topics related to cyber safety such as the variety of networking; the technological implications for the learning process; the exposure issues
of data-mining (both government surveillance and private industry), as well as possible horizon issues related to other emerging technologies.

The World at our Fingertips: Experience-Based Learning Inside and
Outside Classrooms
Instructors: Brigid Burke
3 units*

Schools are cutting back on their funding, especially for field trips, which provide authentic learning experiences for students. This course will provide PK-12 teachers with ways to incorporate fieldwork in their curriculum and instruction through experience-based learning inside classrooms via the Internet and outside classrooms by working with community partners. Participants will learn about Expeditionary Learning design through workshops, WebQuests, learning walks, and crew discussions. They will experience a “slice” of a learning expedition by engaging in fieldwork via the Internet and by visiting local community sites. By the end of the course, participants will have planned multi-disciplinary learning experiences in which literacy, technology, fieldwork, adventure, and service are integrated.
