ENVIRONMENTAL MICROBIOLOGY:
Exploring Metabolic Diversity in the Great Lakes Ecosystem
A symposium sponsored by BGSU’s Office of the Vice Provost for Research
and Rocket Ventures of Northwest Ohio
November 5-6, 2009
Bowen-Thompson Student Union, Bowling Green State University
The health and economic vitality of Ohio and its neighboring Great Lakes states is highly dependent on the ecological integrity of the Great Lakes and their adjoining watersheds. As scientists, we understand that ecosystem integrity is intimately tied to the activities of microbial populations and consortia.
Despite our awareness of their collective importance and ubiquity, we know surprisingly little about the composition of natural microbial communities and the roles of individual microbes within them.
Please join us for this opportunity to network with colleagues and to learn more about
initiatives in environmental microbiology across the Great Lakes region.

Algal fuels offer a decentralized, secure and domestic energy solution. With abundant
land and water resources, as well as a favorable climate for growing algae, Ohio is
primed for growth in this promising sector of the green energy economy.
We will be joined by industry experts, researchers and entrepreneurs who will share
their visions of prospects, partnerships and possibilities in this emerging industry.
